How Life has Changed for Nurses Since Covid
Prior to the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020, hospitals and healthcare facilities were normal and running smoothly, until the virus spread quickly, filling hospitals with ill patients. This increase in sick people resulted in a limited supply of medicine and equipment. Ultimately, there were more ill patients than there were doctors and nurses to help. Once the vaccine became a requirement for healthcare workers, some refused, resulting in an even lower amount of staff. The vaccine was mandated as a goal that nurses would not be able to catch and spread the virus to other patients and healthcare workers, but some nurses felt uncomfortable getting a vaccine that had been out for so little time. The number continues decreasing due to stress, fear of becoming ill, and worsening working conditions.
In 2019, before the coronavirus, there were around 5.2 million nurses in the United States. Today, there are about 3 million nurses, meaning the number of nurses has decreased by 2 million since the coronavirus. Due to the high demand for nurses, their wages were raised to keep them and push others towards helping out. Now, things are beginning to settle down, though coronavirus cases are still happening, with more variants, but the healthcare professions are now aware of treatment and how to best help the patients. Many lives were lost, and this virus will definetly go down in history and be talked about for generations. These brave nurses saved thousands of lives and we couldn't have done it without them.
